No desert for me
I was in the house for too long or maybe it was my exhaust fan-less electric stove and those burned veggie sausages or the hundreds of calculations floating around in my head.
About 3:00 yesterday. I decided I wanted to go the desert. I cleaned briefly, then packed a quick bag and drove off. I had map-quested the distance to Nevada – not fully expecting to make it there but maybe southern Oregon at least. Since January of last year, I’ve had a craving to see sand for miles, bare mountains and skittering lizards. On our road trip this summer, we came close. Parts of Idaho, a black dry moonscape but I need orange, yellow and some red, plus cacti.
Had CDs, a decent stereo in the rental car. Groovin. I used to solo last minute road trip when I lived in Colorado, usually leaving early early morning though. Better idea. I-5 on a south on a Friday. 1-5 with an accident. I felt stubborn, I was going to putter through this traffic and be on my way. Soon. The slow pace gave me time to think. Nevada was far, I had to be back for work on Tuesday. Wait, I work from home, home can be anywhere. I forgot my computer. Inch, inch, brake light. I had gone a few miles, it had been almost an hour.
Revised plan. Go back in reverse traffic, pick up your computer, wait till the accident clears, then leave. Woo-hoo. Plan in motion again. Music up, head wobbling to bass. Brake lights. My head sags. More thinking. My legs start to go numb, it had only been an hour and half, usually they make it around 2 hours. Huh, I can’t really drive more then 2 hours without needing a half hour stretch. Nevada is really far, especially with half hour breaks. And I did pay for that snowshoe trip tomorrow already, I’d be missing that. hmmm
Plan terminated. Lame bird.
However, after a great Sun Liquor – Sushi night with Angie, followed by brilliant sunlight for the Flickr Photoshoe trip. The bird doesn’t feel so lame. Pictures will be posted tomorrow!

Eastern washington has desert as well. Though I'm not sure if you'd want to traverse the mountains at this time of year.

Hey, idea #whatever ... plan a trip to LA, ensuring to bring the stick sister for company ;o), hit the Mohave, Death Valley and Joshua Tree.
I do not have first hand experience but a couple hiking buddies said it is beautiful in the spring when the foliage is flowering.

Allen - guess what I'm thinking of doing for my birthday? Joshua Tree!
Laura - and I'm very glad I didn't trade sand for snow. 10 people with cameras getting turned around on a loop trail - and crack almonds. Perfect day.
