It's not Crystal City

For the next month, I’m working from home (Seattle) Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays. We figured having set work hours was better for everyone involved. And, it was the strangest feeling. On Monday, I actually thought “well, I have to work tomorrow so I should get this done today or can’t stay up too late, I have a meeting at 8:30.” It doesn’t sound abnormal, but when I don’t have to leave the house it’s feels different or maybe feels like it should feel different.

I woke up Tuesday at 7:30, showered and put on real clothes (jeans vs. fuzzy lounge pants), made coffee, checked personal email etc. At 8:30, I walked over to my work computer section, which consists of two bean bags, a shag rug and a coffee table I found in the alley. That was my commute to the office. For our meeting, we used GoTo meeting and Skype. I’m not pushing or selling, but GoTo meeting is amazing – I could see the documents on Carol’s computer. She could even give ME control – and I could edit, save, etc – combine that with chatting via headset on Skype and it was almost as efficient as being there. Except that Carol was just a sound in my right ear, which is actually the same as a phone but when it’s a headset and you can take control of their computer, it's a little John Malkovich.

Today, I positioned my bean bags on top of each other for greater ergonomics. In my sleepy state I over shifted, bags tipped and I ended up under the coffee table wedged between boxes and my white fuzzy office “chairs”. I had to scoot out like a worm and roll over the massive lumps to regroup.

It’s an adjustment period.

  • I'm going to let the fact that it's *not* Crystal City wash over me with the warm feeling of immeasurable envy.
