Screw the bulb in

I just got back from my volunteer day at 826. As part of the cross training, I was in the backroom or the “publishing company.” Our tasks: edit photos, print story pages, copy large drawings and connect the pieces together, collate and bind books. I missed a lot of the spastic, crazy interaction with the kids, but I really enjoyed the pace, socializing, and task focus of the publishing.

I also had my first black and white printing class last night. It’s at Seattle Central Community college – an affordable way to finally learn what still seems to be the building block of basic photography. Black and white darkroom. Small group, played with filters, looked at previous student photos and checked out the darkroom.

Last Thursday, I met with my Flickr photography group. Each meet up, there is a photography contest and plenty of chatter about equipment, classes and great photo locations. This week was flickerite parts, so we ended up with some amazing pictures of heads, ears, hands and this one of an eyeball by David, an amazing Seattle based photographer.

These events felt very natural to me and a part of me reengaged, like a slumbering bear waking and finding a basket of massive blackberries. Thanks to my friend Chris, I figured out why - task based socialization. For a lifelong goofy fidget, it’s the perfect mix. Assigned complete-able tasks, movement, laughter, silliness and efficiency. I played soccer for over 20 years, and worked in restaurants or catering for almost 10 years. I also participated in local park clean-ups for a lot of my time in DC. And school, school is just years and years of task based socialization.

Work doesn’t seem to be structured the same way, hardly any movement (meeting butt), assigned tasks, yes, but they are so complex that they are rarely finished in a day if ever. Ok, we get some laughter and the occasional bit of silliness, but often I think that’s more just me being inappropriate.

I don’t know where this revelation leads. Maybe it’s just an encouraging sign that I’ve figured something out.

(And since a few people asked, my sister is not withering away. It's the lens and her exaggerated pose. See the other photo below. She's just good at getting into character)

  • *blush*... Thank you.

And... yeah, I think I like that -- "task based socialization". I bet that has a lot to do with why I like Pair Programming... Hmmmmm. (*wanders off and thinks about this...*)
